Prologue

Not a leaf rattled through the mountains as a harsh wind blew through. A lithe creature bounded out from behind a boulder, black-and-white fur shining in the morning sun, the white part of her fur resembling freshly fallen snow.

The slight jerk of her tail was a signal that brought the survivors of the harsh past forth at once. The cats carefully crept to the beginning of a ledge, looking over it to see what was beyond. The she-cat who appeared to be the leader sighed.

I thought we were nearly there… The she-cat thought tiredly. She looked behind her to see her measly Clan of five warriors, a queen, and a kit. The cat heard a kit mew behind her.

“Purestep, are we there yet, like you promised?” The kit squeaked, freezing the she-cat’s blood, causing her to look back at the kit sadly.

“I know we’re not there yet, Littlekit, but we’re almost. I can feel it! Our leader will get us there.” The queen assured with a nod.

“But you said that yesterday!” The kit protested.

The leader’s tail twitched. These cats were counting on her. They were trusting her with their lives. The journey had to go on, so bunching up her muscles the leader was sizing up a large rock below. Then she leaped and landed safely.

“It’s okay.” The she-cat confirmed from below, her icy eyes like a frozen lake reflecting the blue sky scanning the cats above, making sure that they were all okay. They had already lost two of Purestep’s kits and a warrior. Who else would they loose?

The she-cat decided that no cats would die if she could help it. Jumping off the rock onto sloping ground, the leader noticed that the wind was blowing down on her and her cats. She heard lighting crackle and thunder boom in the distance.

“Hurry!” The she-cat mewed, watching as her cats leaped down on the rock and onto fair ground. They still had a long ways to go, and the worried leader didn’t know where they were going. With faith in SpiritClan, however, they would get there, no matter how long it took.

Chapter One

ThunderClan, POV, Rainkit

The sun that shined through the bracken of the ThunderClan camp suddenly disappeared, replacing Rainkit’s vision with something brown and furry.

“Eeck!” Rainkit squealed, snapping awake and jumping back a little, bumping into the single queen in the nursery.

“Sorry, Cedarbreeze.” Rainkit mewed, tail drooping. Was she in trouble? The fear scent was just dripping from her fur as she eyed the she-cat with wide eyes.

One moon in your new Clan and you’re already making enemies! Rainkit scolded herself. Then she relaxed as Cedarbreeze started chuckling.

“Huh?” Rainkit mewed softly. She had been waiting for the she-cat to scold her for bumping into her.

“It’s all right, Rainkit. It’s only natural for kits to be a little jumpy and playful.” Cedarbreeze mewed, nodding. Rainkit sighed in relief. She decided that she could trust this she-cat. She even felt comfortable with her, but she knew that Cedarbreeze would never replace her mother. Her tail drooped even more to think of that Thunderpath, the monster that had crushed her mother.

“What’s wrong?” Mewed Lilackit, a kit about three moons younger than her. Rainkit was almost ready to be an apprentice, at five moons. Just one more moon…

“I’m sure she’s just bored,” Nightkit, Cedarbreeze’s other kit, mewed, “right, Rainkit?”

“I’m not so…” But Lilackit trailed off. Rainkit sighed, and then shook her head, trying to clear it of any sad thoughts. She was living in a Clan now, with a new life. She had to start over and stop thinking about the past.

“Yea, just bored.” Rainkit lied.

“See? She’s fine.” Nightkit insisted. Rainkit saw that Lilackit still looked doubtful. Maybe this kit understood. Rainkit flashed a weak, encouraging smile.

“Yea. Let’s go play.” Rainkit decided to agree. She needed to get her mind off the past.

“Oh, I know!” Nightkit squealed, her fur bristling with excitement.

“What?” Lilackit mewed, interested. Rainkit sat by to watch the kits decide what they wanted to do.

“Let’s go ask a warrior to show us the hunter’s crouch!” Nightkit mewed, bustling out of the nursery.

“Okay!” Lilackit mewed excitedly, following her sister.

“Hey! Don’t forget me!” Rainkit squealed, running after the others.

“Leave the warriors to their business!” Rainkit heard Cedarbreeze call.

“Wow! This is exciting! Where do we go?” Lilackit asked, looking around with wide eyes.

“Um,” Nightkit uttered, looking around the huge camp.

“Wow…” Rainkit whispered to herself as she saw the hugeness of ThunderClan camp. She wanted her father to see this.

“This way!” Nightkit squealed, heading for the empty apprentice’s den.

“Oh, which den is that?” Lilackit mewed.

“That’s the apprentice’s den!” Rainkit answered, trotting up from behind the kits. She suddenly realized that she was way bigger than the kits. Rainkit suddenly felt strong.

“Oh, we’ll be there some day!” Nightkit mewed.

“In a few moons.” Rainkit nodded.

“You’ll be there next moon.” Rainkit heard Lilackit sigh.

“Don’t worry, you’ll be there, too. And I’ll even get your nests ready.” Rainkit promised.

“Well, I’m going to make my own nest.” Nightkit mewed matter-of-factly. Rainkit laughed.

“I’ll let you do that.” Rainkit meowed. There was a moment where there was purring and laughter, and the leaves stirred and the sun popped out a little. It was leaf-fall, according to the other cats in the Clan. Soon, the sun would hide behind the clouds completely. Rainkit didn’t want the sun to leave. Its warmth reminded her of her mother.

“Hey, I’ve got an idea.” Nightkit meowed.

“Hm?” Lilackit asked, cocking her head.

“Let’s go check out the apprentices den!” Nightkit meowed.

“But we’re not-“

“Come on!” Nightkit squealed and ran into the den. Lilackit sighed.

“I think we need to get her out of there.” Rainkit mewed. Lilackit nodded.

Rainkit bounded into the den, Lilackit on her heels.

“Woa..” Lilackit mewed, looking around.

“I can’t wait to be an apprentice. This place is great!” Nightkit mewed.

“I know.” Rainkit agreed, enjoying the way the den sloped down a bit. There was a spot where the sun shined through the bracken and shed light on an old nest. It was an excellent spot for sunning, but not for when the rain fell down hard.

“What are you doing in here? You’re not apprentices!” A voice growled from outside, chilling Rainpaw’s blood. All three kits looked around at once to see a huge tom. Rainpaw heard Nightkit gasp, and Rainpaw knew why. The tom, not only was he huge, but he had a long vertical scar that went vertically through his right eye. His fur was short, but growing longer as the weather got colder. His fur was a reddish-brown color, pelted with black spots and faded stripes that turned from black to the same color as his pelt. What scared Rainkit the most was his expression, angry and annoyed.

No! We’ve been caught! What if we don’t get to be apprentices now? Oh, what have I done? Rainkit thought sadly.

“Get back to the nursery, all three of you.” The warrior snarled, backing out of the entrance. Just the look on his face made Rainkit want to bolt out of the den, and she did, Nightkit following. However, Lilackit fell behind. Only when Nightkit and Rainkit had made it back to the nursery did they realize that Lilackit was gone.

“Lilackit!” Nightkit squealed, and both kits looked out of the den for the brown kit. They saw her talking to the scarred warrior.

“W-what if he eats her?” Nightkit mewed, quivering.

“What?” Cedarbreeze meowed from the back of the nursery.

“Don’t be silly, he’s not going to eat her, he’s in this Clan. He wouldn’t dare hurt kits.” Rainkit mewed.

“Oh.” Nightkit mewed.

“She’s coming!” Rainkit mewed, watching Lilackit pad back to them calmly. No bolting or anything. The kit was completely calm.

“You guys look like you saw a ghost.” Lilackit mewed.

“Did he threaten you?” Nightkit challenged.

“N-no… Why would you think that?” Lilackit mewed. Nightkit let her fur lie flat.

“Oh. Then what were you guys talking about?” Nightkit asked, curious as she stepped aside and let her sister inside the nursery.

“Well… I asked him who he was. His name’s Hawkfire, and guess what?” Lilackit’s voice became higher, more excited.

“Oh, what?” Nightkit mewed. Rainkit sat in her small nest and watched the two siblings.

“He’s the deputy of ThunderClan!” Lilackit exclaimed, her fur fluffed up.

“That’s so cool! But I think Whitestar should have picked a nicer cat as deputy.” Nightkit mewed innocently. Before Lilackit or Rainkit could reply, Cedarbreeze had launched herself into the conversation.

“Don’t question Whitestar’s decisions. Hawkfire is a good warrior. He couldn’t have chosen better.” Cedarbreeze meowed. However, was that doubt that Rainkit heard in Cedarbreeze’s voice?

“Oh.” Nightkit let her head hang down in embarrassment. Suddenly, Rainkit felt very tired, and she gave a large yawn.

“That’s okay,” Meowed Cedarbreeze, giving her kit a reassuring lick, “you didn’t know. Just keep opinions like that to yourself in the future.”

“But I can’t control them.” Nightkit mewed.

“Don’t worry, you’ll learn.” Cedarbreeze mewed. At that moment, Rainkit envied Lilackit and Nightkit. They both had a loving mother, and Rainkit had no one.

“It looks like it’s time for you to get some rest.” Cedarbreeze meowed.

“I don’t… feel… tired…” Nightkit insisted slowly, before yawning and starting to drift off.

“I want to be big and strong like Hawkfire, when I’m a warrior.” Lilackit mewed sleepily.

“Don’t worry, you’ll get there.” Was the last thing Rainkit heard Cedarbreeze tell her kits before she let sleep take over.

Chapter Two

WindClan, POV, Pinepaw

“Grayfoot! Grayfoot! Help, my paw!” Came the shrill cry of Grasspaw. Pinepaw rolled his eyes. Dramatic Grasspaw, he thought, letting his tail swipe at the grass.

He came from the east corner of WindClan camp, next to a clump of heather and watched as Grasspaw limped into camp, wailing her stupid head off.

He saw Grayfoot shoot out of the medicine den, an ancient wolf den carved out many, many, many moons ago as if his tail were on fire.

“Grasspaw! What in the name of StarClan happened? Are you alright?” Grayfoot called, beckoning the she-cat into his den. Pinepaw chuckled as he heard Grayfoot meowing about how Grasspaw shouldn’t be so dramatic.

“Honestly, it’s just a-a… thorn?” Grayfoot meowed, his sentence ending in a questioning mew.

A thorn? How did that get on the moor? Pinepaw wondered, and he curiously crept out from behind the fern.

“I heard yowling from all the way across the moor! Have ShadowClan finally attacked?” A clear yowl shot through camp. Pinepaw turned around to see Fallenwing and his apprentice, Redpaw.

“Grasspaw! It was Grasspaw, wasn’t it? Where’s my sister, is she okay?” Redpaw mewed defensively. “I’ll take on the cat who hurt her!” Redpaw growled, sinking into a fighting stance and baring his fangs to show he was capable of hurting a cat. Pinepaw rolled his eyes.

“Grasspaw’s fine. Just a thorn.” Pinepaw meowed. “ShadowClan isn’t attacking.” He saw Redpaw utter a quick ‘oh’ and take a glance at his mentor in embarrassment.

“Don’t worry about it, Redpaw. At least we know that you’d be willing to defend your Clan, and that’s what counts.” Nodded Fallenwing, his dark brown tabby fur gleaming, as if it had just been groomed.

Pinepaw looked around the clearing to see Sugarwind strolling into camp carrying three dead rabbits. Pinepaw respected her catch. Then he looked back at Redpaw and Fallenwing, who licked his fur hastily.

Oh, great StarClan, Pinepaw thought. Look who’s all mooney-eyed.

Snorting, Pinepaw left Sugarwind and Fallenwing to their sappy moment and started searching for his mentor. He finally saw Moontail coming from WindClan’s dirtplace in the far, far corner of camp.

“Moontail! You got anything for me to do?” Pinepaw yowled across the clearing, his striped tail waving. He saw Moontail look up quickly with wide, blue eyes.

“Um… umm…” Moontail mumbled. Pinepaw rolled his eyes again.

He’s my mentor. He’s supposed to know what I’m supposed to do! Please, not more battle moves, Pinepaw begged inside his head.

“Hm… well… I, uh…” Moontail muttered again. Pinepaw thought that Moontail obviously had nothing planned for him.

“Let all cats that can catch their own prey meet here below the Tall Hill!” The yowl rang throughout the moor.

Saved by the Clan meeting, thought Pinepaw, thinking Moontail was lucky to have been given more time to decide what to do. Pinepaw saw Wolfstar, high on the hill, his head thrown impressively into the air and then lowering it to survey his clanmates.

Pinepaw padded up to the hill and looked up at the leader. Pinepaw briefly met the leader’s green eyes. All of a sudden, Pinepaw’s vision blackened to be replaced by blazing green fire.

“Huh?” Pinepaw muttered. He tried to move, but couldn’t feel his paws. Suddenly, the green fire bled into pure ruby red fire. Pinepaw gasped, his mouth open in horror as the fire melted into blood and seemed to be pooling from a huge, gaping hole that lead into an endless cave.

“No! No!” Pinepaw screeched as the hot, sticky crimson liquid started to lap at his frozen paws. The cave mouth turned into huge jaws, and shadows started creeping up on him. He heard the sounds of yowling near by, and he saw a golden paw disappear beneath the blood, as if the cat were drowning in it.

“No! Help!” Pinepaw yowled, trying to fight the current of blood, however, he still couldn’t move. Just as the blood cascaded over Pinepaw’s head, everything disappeared to be replaced by a calm blackness.

Huh? Where am I? Pinepaw wondered, his ears suddenly pricking up when he heard birdsong. He opened his eyes to see a soft, green clearing that was unfamiliar to him. It smelled of WindClan, but had an… herby smell.

The medicine cat den? Pinepaw wondered, looking around. The clearing wasn’t large, but he appeared to be in a dome with the roof open, the sun pooling inside. He turned and jumped when he saw his mentor, Moontail, in a nest behind him, moaning in agony.

“Moontail! Are you okay? Where are we?” Pinepaw meowed. All arrogance and sarcasm had left the apprentice’s voice to be replaced by worry. He noticed his mentor had a horrible bite on his left hind leg.

“Moontail, you’re hurt! Where’s Grayfoot?” Pinepaw demanded, but he could only hear Moontail whispering something faint, something hard to hear.

Was it his name? Pinepaw couldn’t tell.

Pinepaw.” Moontail whispered.

“Moontail? Yea, I’m here.” Pinepaw meowed, leaning closer. Suddenly, the whole den started to fade away.

Pinepaw.” A voice whispered. However, it wasn’t Moontail.

“Pinepaw!” The voice suddenly snapped, and Pinepaw snapped out of the trance.

“What?” Pinepaw mewed distractedly. He saw Redpaw next to him, eyeing him oddly.

“Are you okay? You look like you’re going to fall asleep on your paws!” Redpaw mewed anxiously. Pinepaw frowned.

“N-no. I’m not tired.” Pinepaw meowed. “Is the meeting over?”

Redpaw looked at him, surprised.

“It hasn’t even begun, Pinepaw.” Redpaw meowed. “Are you sure you shouldn’t go see Grayfoot?”

“I’m fine.” Pinepaw meowed firmly, more like his old self again. But Pinepaw was far from fine. He was freaked out by the vision he had just had, the vision he couldn’t understand why he had. What he really couldn’t understand was how such a long vision could have only lasted a few heart-beats when it had felt like a few minutes. Wolfstar started to speak, so Pinepaw shook himself of the thoughts and concentrated on the leader.

“The dawn patrol that came back scented ShadowClan on our border. Fallenwing said there was a dead rabbit, reeking of ShadowClan.” Wolfstar yowled. Shrill cries of disapproval rang throughout the camp.

Stupid ShadowClan. Why do they need our rabbits Don’t they have plenty of prey in their stupid territory? Pinepaw thought bitterly. He felt a growl grow in his throat.

“I have decided that I will send a patrol to the border and wait for ShadowClan when they come.” Wolfstar declared, boldly gazing at his Clan. Yowls of approval raged through WindClan camp. Pinepaw rolled his eyes.

Can’t we just talk it out? Pinepaw thought. He felt Redpaw bristling with excitement next to him.

“Wow! I hope Wolfstar sends me!” Redpaw mewed. Pinepaw snorted.

“I bet he’s only sending senior warriors.” Pinepaw meowed. Redpaw mewed in disappointment. “Aww, let’s hope not!”

Pinepaw snorted again.

Stupid battles. Why can’t we all just get along?

“Spottedheart and I have already decided who will be on the patrol.” Wolfstar yowled again. Suddenly, the clearing became tense and silent. It seemed as if the whole of WindClan wanted to go. Pinepaw’s amber eyes stretched wide.

Is all we ever do fight? Pinepaw wondered.

“Spottedheart will lead the patrol,” Wolfstar meowed as the cheetah-pelted deputy nodded respectfully, “Fallenwing and Pinepaw will go with them,” Pinepaw felt Redpaw tense, his fur seeming to bristle with electricity. Pinepaw groaned inwardly.

“Watertail will also go,” Pinepaw’s ears flicked as he saw the newer blue-gray warrior tense up more than the rest.

Is he hiding something? Pinepaw thought. I hope there isn’t a she-cat in ShadowClan or something!

“And finally, Moontail will go. That is all. The patrol may leave now.” Wolfstar finished and padded down the hill to converse with his deputy.

“You’re so lucky! You get to go!” Redpaw suddenly exploded, his amber eyes round and his red fur fluffed up.

“I’d trade places with you any day. What’s so great about battling?” Pinepaw asked. When Pinepaw thought that Redpaw’s eyes couldn’t get any wider, they did.

“What’s so great about battling? What a question! Battling is serving your Clan! You get respected!” Redpaw meowed excitedly.

“But you can also die.” Pinepaw pointed out.

“But I’d die serving my Clan.” Redpaw insisted. Pinepaw rolled his eyes, yet again.

“Uh-huh.” Pinepaw meowed, turning around and padding away from Redpaw.

What mouse-brains! Pinepaw thought, looking around camp. WindClan was buzzing with the electricity of the upcoming battle. Moontail came up behind Pinepaw.

“The patrol is ready to leave.” Moontail was also excited.

Are you all mad? Pinepaw nearly growled, following Spottedheart’s patrol out of camp. Pinepaw felt like he was committing suicide as he raced over the lush Green-leaf grass of the moorland. His ears flattened as he dodged some heather.

Hey, Amber! I need to ask you something. If you and the other RPers don't mind, I'd like to try and make an animated series about this FanFic! Of course I'll need voices. My sister and I can't do all of it!

If you agree, I'll get to work right away after I finish my current projects. It'll follow the FanFic to the letter.
