OOC: Before the earthquake

Bearpaw trotted through the marsh, sniffing in the scents. He couldn't see Foxpaw anywhere. He sighed and considered going back to camp. How could someone be so peppy? He couldn't see it possible. He caught scent of a frog and froze, eyes percing the landscape. He spotted the green frog a bit away and dropped down into a hunter's crouch. It wasn't that big, pretty small actually, but still prey. He stalked a ways forward and pounced low. The frog jumped to the right but Bearpaw was ready. His paws pounced again, landing flat on the frog. His weight snapped its back and he scrapped some mud over the frog to gather it later. Now he was back to try and find Foxpaw.

OOC: *gives Beerpaw the hand*

Kestrelpaw, after becoming bored with the day, had set out on a little hunt of happiness... or... semihappiness. Contentment, yes, that's a good word, contentment. He padded along, testing the scents and keeping his eyes keen for anything above and below the thick canopy. Ahead of him he caught site of a frog.

This would be his first catch, well, other than the other prey he got, though he didn't actually "catch" it. He crouched down and crept forward, going close to the next meal of a cat, but as he got closer he sawa shadow, and then in a split second Bearpaw jumped from nowhere and pounced on top of the thing.

He scraped at the ground angrily, growling. He grunted and turned around, but after a few steps he sighed. Oh, what was he going to do? He went off again, looking for something else catchable.

OOC: Oh lovely topic change

Bearpaw sniffed, looking for more prey or Foxpaw. Instead he caught wiff of Kestrelpaw. His head wiveled around looking for his clanmate. He didn't see him so shrugged and padded on. There was no prey to be found now. He cursed under his breath and focused on finding Foxpaw, wherever she had ran off to.

Hehe! He doesn't see me! A flash of ginger slipped between the underbrush, stirring the leaves and mud. The small figure stopped on a slight ledge just above Bearpaw's head, her blue eyes shining. "Lookin' for me?" she crowed, waving her tail.

Bearpaw looked up at Foxpaw and sighed. How could someone be so peppy? He mumbled, "Yeah, I was a second ago." He yawned and stretched his back. "Already caught a frog," he mumbled, blinking some of the sleep from his eyes.

Foxpaw jumped down from the ledge, and landed almost ontop of a lizard. "Whoa!" she squeaked, instinctively digging her claws into the slimy creature. It fell limp beneath her. "Wow! I caught a lizard!" she mewed, grinning.

Bearpaw blinked at the accidental catch. He joked, "Nice form." Eh, he was trying to be somewhat friendly. He was still somewhat sleepy, but with the rain stopped for now he was more awake than usual. His brown pelt rippled as he moved to point behind Foxpaw with a paw. He asked, "Hunt over there?"

Foxpaw looked behind her, where Bearpaw had pointed. "Huh? Oh, sure!" She got up, completely forgetting to bury her lizard, and charged over to where the tom had told her to hunt.

Bearpaw watched her tear off, forgetting completely about her freshkill. He scraped mud over it for her, and for the sake of the clan. Any prey counted now. He trotted after her at yet again his own pace. This time he watched for her darting around the marshland. He yawned and kept trotting on, occasionally sniffing for prey scents. That's when he heard the sound. It was an odd hissing noise that sounded really close. He blinked and noticed that a snake was poised right in front of his path, flicking its tongue at him. He fluffed up his fur, recongnizing it to be poisionous. He let out a low growl followed by a hiss. But he didn't strike, not with a poised snake ready to strike facing him down. That would be foolish. One bite and it could possibly mean the end of his life.

OOC: SHUDDAP YOU! I'm bored....

Kestrelpaw searched through the forest, picking up varient smells. SOme of his clanmates who were not too far off, and others of prey, and others of plants, the rest... the smell of momentarily ceased rain. It was a delicious smell, much better than the smell of falling rain. This smell was fresh, clean, and it made new scents the easier to find.

Sudenly, he caught a whiff of something, but it was nothing familiar to his nose. He crouched quickly, his stance perfect.. or close to that, and prowled forward. It didn't smell like a cat nor a badger nor a fox... nor a mouse. What was it? He crept silently,his large paws surprisingly not making a sound. He thanked the mud. It had to be muffling it in a way, right? Of course.

When he got close enough to the bush he bunched his muscles and sprang forward inside. Instantly, he saw the brown fur of a squirrel, that in an instant, dashed away. With as much speed as he could give he persued the catch. He didn't know there were squirrels in ShadowClan! Just rats, frogs, and lizards!

The rodent quickly found a tree and started it's way up, but with as much determination as he had with the lizard, Kestrelpaw unsheathed his claws and jumped up, coming over a good amount of tree and gasping the bark. He opened his jaws and luckily grabbed a good chuck of tail before he started to slid back down the slick wood. With speed and power, he threw the catch to the ground. It lay there, paralyzed, giving him time to jump from the tree, butnot long after it was up again and running.

With huffs of determination and aggitation he persued the brown thing as it tried for another tree, but he speed up his paws he pounced at it before it before it could make it. With sharp teeth he dug them into it's back, but its flailed scrabbling and kicking and scratching mad him drop it, and again it tried to hobble away, but this time it went away from trees, trying to find any type of suitable cover.

After a shake he was after it again, and this time with quicker time. He was on it again in second, attacking it's head. Picking its small skull up in his jaws and giving a quick, powerful thrash in his jaws its neck snapped with the sound of a twig and it went limb. He dropped the squirrel.

His first catch, though turned completely uneccessary, practically using some fighting moves in his attack, but he did it anyways, and it made his fur bristle with excitement.

OOC: UNECCESARILY LONG POST OF EFFORT! 8D

Hey? What was that hissing? Foxpaw stopped and turned around. A few fox-lengths away, Bearpaw was puffed up and growling at a long, lizard-like thing. Only it didn't have legs. It's a snake! And it looked like it was going to bite Bearpaw!

She crouched, her eyes huge, and pounced, landing on the snake's back, just behind it's head. An angry hiss followed from the reptile, and she squeaked in fear, driving her claws into it's neck on instinct.

Kestrelpaw picked up the squirrel. How did the thing get over here? It must have run in from ThunderClan. With a shrug he traveled randomly through the forest, the prey hanging from his jaws. He was reluctant to put it down, still oblivious to the whole, bury your prey thing.

With idle steps without thought Kestrelpaw jumped as he suddenly heard a squeak. Goodness, what was that? He padded quickly towards the sound and stepped from the bush, but he stepped back when he noticed he'd almost stepped on the head of a snake. Goodness! His eyes wide he looked at the thing that nearly made him jump with the surpirse of it even being there, and Foxkit was standing right on it.

What was going on with this place?

"Is it dead?" she asked, her eyes looking towards Kestrelpaw. She forgot that she was supposed to be mad at him. She kept her claws in the snake's neck, just in case it was still alive. Foxpaw's eyes were huge with fear and slight anger. What if that snake had bitten Bearpaw?

Kestrelpaw looked down at the snake. It seemed to be wriggling a bit. Quickly he slammed it's head with his large paw, it didn't do too much. Almost nothing. "Yeah, I think it's dead." He looked at Bearpaw, the tom looked alright. He sniffed the cat. He didn't smell blood or any type of quick acting infection. He seemed fine. "I think everyone is alright."

"Good." Foxpaw let out a shaky sigh of relief, but didn't move away from the reptile, lest it try to bite her.

When he sighed, he realized he'd dropped the squirrel he caught on the ground. Quickly he picked it up, almost as if another snake would come out and infect it with it's bite, which he assumed was filled with poison. Tension thickened the air. Man, he didn't like the feeling. It was like tar was stuck in his fur. "So uh..." he traile doff, trying to find something to lighten the mood, "good catch?" He managed to saw, moving his paw towards the dead snake.

"Thanks," Foxpaw's voice was still a little shaky. She was shokced that she'd managed to pounce on the snake in time. It could have bitten her denmate and killed him!

Bearpaw shook his fur and padded over to his denmates and sniffed the snake. It was dead, alright, but he didn't want to take any chances. He shook his head and said, "It's a good kill but not good prey. Poison could still be inside it and it wouldn't be great to eat." Then he spoke to Foxpaw, "You can get off of it now, we need to bury it, still. Don't want anyone getting poison on them."

"Okay." Foxpaw stepped carefully over the snake, sniffing it warily. As if it would come alive and bite her. Then she sat down and scuffed her paws in the mud, getting the snake's blood off her claws. "Blech! It smells gross!" she said, wrinkling her nose.

Bearpaw started to bury the snake's dead body. He answered, "It's the poison smell. Repulsive, isn't it?" Finally when it was entirely covered he patted it more compact with a paw. He didn't want any dirt coming loose. "Back to hunting?" he asked nonchantly, as if nothing had ever happened.

Kestrelpaw twitched an ear. What an odd day really. "Uh.. sure," he said through the squirrel. Now where would be a good place to put it? Mm. Well, probably near the snake. He'd remember where it was then, right? He thought the whole bury the snake thing was a good idea to hide stuff, so he unearthed some dirt and placed the foreign food into the small hole before covering it up again.

That seems like it'd work. Now that badger wouldn't take his food again. Which reminded him. He had to tell someone about that.

Bearpaw trotted past the two, jaws opened wide and tasting the air. There still wasn't any other prey scents to be found. The snake was the most logical answer to the missing prey. He swiped at the ground with anger. He sniffed harder, looking for even the smallest scent. At last he caught wind of more frog and stared following the trail. He saw it after a bit and stared stalking towards it. It's back was turned and it was watching a fly buzzing around. It's red tounge lashed out and snagged the bug. That's when Bearpaw pounced. The frog hadn't detected Bearpaw between its own hunting and that his brown pelt blended in so well. He landed square on it and depatched it with a swift blow to its spine.

Foxpaw smiled and jumped up, sniffing the air. She couldn't smell anything, really... Only a small prey scent. Darn... she thought. Well, the rain killed off any prey that could be found except for frogs and lizards! She looked up at the trees, thinking. Maybe if she could get up in one of the trees, she could catch another lizard...?

Kestrelpaw stepped from the bush and tilted his head at Foxpaw. He looked into her direction at the trees. "It's kind of hard to climb with the wet bark... even if you knew how to." She didn't know how to climb a tree right? He didn't. She shouldn't have either. He glanced to the side when he heard a thumb on the ground. "Good catch," he mewed to Bearpaw, surpised he found something after the snake fiasco.

She twitched her ears and looked towards Kestrelpaw. "But all the prey is in the trees. Or most of it is, anyway."
