He’s pretty small.

Personality:

As his name obviously suggests, Phantompaw is rather quiet. However, he is not this because of a case of shyness, nor out of not knowing what to say, it is just out of defiance and boredom. Most cats can’t hold his gaze for long, nor can they make him pay attention. He is quite mysterious and will disappear at a moment’s notice. Speaking of which, Phantom is very good at going around unnoticed. He can slip out of a sticky situation without being spotted, and can listen in on conversations before his clan mates even know he went missing. Most don’t notice his whereabouts. His paw steps themselves are nothing but a simple whisper here and there. Makes him a great hunter and perfect for sneak attacks. Inside, Phantompaw is conflicted and somewhat gone. He has been known to stare at the moon for hours, just sitting there, totally a statue. Why? Some say it’s because of his mother’s disappearance, and maybe it is. Danger calls to him at times, making him hungry for excitement and the life of a different cat. He wants more. He wants to fight. Even more so, he wants to be noticed. No one notices him. He is always thrown into the shadows. Sure, he used to get the pity vote for his parents deaths, but that soon passed and he was back to the usual loner-status. Now, it’s not that he doesn’t miss his kin, his sister especially; it’s that he refuses to show it. His feelings are often bottled up and stored away.

When he does talk, Phantompaw hasn’t the nicest tone. He has a terrible temper, and often pre-judges a feline before he gets to know them. He is often set off at any little thing, and any tiny mistake. It infuriates him when cats are clueless and when cats are simply too happy. He never wishes to be that joyful, it’s much too easy. Phantompaw hates losing, and is very competitive. To a point where he gets himself in dangerous places. I would say his greatest hate though, above anything else, is being told what to do. He considers himself independent and refuses to take orders from arrogant warriors. Even when he does, he usually purposefully screws it up. Big time. Then blames it on the miserable cat who set him on the task in the first place. His retorts and come-backs are sharp and hurtful and he often doesn’t think before saying what he thinks, as he is that direct sort of apprentice. He’s gained many cat’s distrust and dislike in this manner. Yeah, you guessed it. Phantompaw is also a sarcastic beast. For this reason, no cat could ever describe his personality to be ‘dull’. His vocabulary of teases is incredible and stretches far beyond the average. He is witty and likes to poke at tender spots in a cat’s memories. It’s mean, but he holds back most of the time. From onlookers his arguments and conversations with fellow apprentices can get a few to chuckle. You’ll know if you’ve gained this cat’s favor if his jabs loosen up a little and they are followed by a grin.

History:
Born to a Miss Kestrelleaf and a Mister Ragedclaw, Phantompaw had a remotely normal kit hood. Okay, normal is the wrong word... Tragic makes more sense. His only sibling to survive, Jadekit, was a polar opposite to him. She was a bubbly, cheerful, loving ball of fur. If anything, Jadekit brightened up his day. Most cats like that would now make him angry. Perhaps she was the reason he eventually learned to hate happy cats. But for now, she was Phantomkit’s light and sun. His mother, never really a queen at heart, left the nursery as fast as she could, letting her two kits be weaned by another mother. Neither minded much as they had each other and came to have a very good relationship with their adopted mom. Sure, their parents were honest cats, but they didn’t feel responsible for their children and often busied themselves to get away from them. Besides around his sister, Phantomkit was just as quiet and obnoxious as he is now.

They were barely 3 moons old when Ragedclaw’s body was dragged back to camp, limp and lifeless with every ounce of warmth drained from it. His bones were shattered, his eyes were dull, and his mate was distraught with grief. The warriors who had brought him told the clan they had found him at the bottom of a small gorge, dead for hours. Phantomkit should have been more crushed, should have felt something at least, but he wasn’t and he didn’t. What really upset him was how suddenly sad Jadekit became. She put on the little façade that she was all right, but he knew she was just hiding under a shell. The subtle differences; the way her head hung, the way her paws dragged just a little bit more, the way her tail drooped a fraction of an inch more. As for his mother Kestrelleaf, she didn’t do well with the loss. A moon later, she too lay at the bottom of that gorge. Everyone knew it was suicide, not an innocent mistake.

Jadekit snapped. Just totally broke. Phantomkit tried to talk to her, make her happier and understand more, but he could tell nothing would help her now. The night of their apprentice ceremony she was nowhere to be found. Nor could she be found for the next 5 moons that led up to where he is now. She was gone and so was that part of him she had taken with her. At the moment, Phantompaw, not being the emotional kind of cat nor the hopeful one, has accepted it with sullen grieving, and moved on. He has went through training like any normal apprentice. His sun is gone.
