Medicine Randomness

Ripplesong padded back into her den. "It seems I have an added responsibility now...." she mewed glancing at her apprentice. "Are you ready for your first lesson?"

Featherpaw nodded enthusiastically. She had been itiching to start her training. More than ready was she to start her first lesson. "I don't think I can be more ready," she said with her excitement.

"Hmm... so, what would you like to start with? Oh! I know. You should probably learn the important herbs first. Does that sound okay to you?" Ripplesong asked.

"Of course!" Featherpaw had always wanted to learn and memorize each and every herb there. Then she'd be able to use them for... who knew what! Well, other than heal of course.

"Alright..." she pointed at a large leafy bundle. "This is catnip. Good for greencough, whitecough, and whatever cough you have. Smells delicious." She padded on to the next bundle. "Borage, used to help queens give more milk. Oh, and the MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL," she emphasized, "is never. EVER eat any red berries. If you see the plant, dig it up immediately. The roots and leaves are helpful, but bury the berries."she mewed. "Are you getting this so far?"

Featherpaw looked at each herb she pointed out and named, trying to engrave it in her mind. "Catnip. Cough. Smells delicious." she mmumbled to herself, trying to keep it in her mind. "Borage. Queens. Milk." She nodded her head.

"I understand, but... why can't we eat the berries?"

"Don't worry if you can't get it the first time. Just ask me if you're not sure," she said, seeing her concentrate so hard. "Those red berries are poisonous. Just one could kill a cat in seconds."she glanced at the herb bundles. I could spend the day describing, but that wouldn't help. Time for some hands-on. We're going herb gathering, so you can really smell the individual herbs." she mewed. "I'll tell you the rest of the herbs as we gather them."

Featherpaw nodded. It was nice to know she had her mentor just in case she forgot something. Soon enough she'd learn the names, all down to the root.

Her eyes widened as she heard what her mentor said. "Just one..." she whispered in astonishment. She imagined one of her siblings stumbling upon on and maybe trying it for themselves. She didn't think Pyropaw and Hollowpaw would do it since they probably wouldn't care enough, but Maplepaw... she just seemed like the one. She couldn't see her sister die at the hands of some kind of.... death berry.

"Okay," Featherpaw said in a more determined voice. She was going to keep that berry in mind and any other herb that would cause harm.
